Dye and Lee's book, The Healthcare Leader's Guide to Actions, Awareness, and Perception named 2017 ACHE book of the Year

The James A. Hamilton Award is given annually to the author(s) of a management or healthcare book judged outstanding by ACHE's Book of the Year Committee. Nominations for the award are solicited from editors in the management publishing field. Created in 1958, the award is underwritten by the Alumni Association of the Graduate Program in Healthcare Administration of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in honor of the late James A. Hamilton, FACHE, the program's founder and course director between 1946 and 1966, and ACHE's 1939-1940 Chairman.

The 2017 winners have been selected: Carson F. Dye, FACHE, and Brett D. Lee, PhD, FACHE, for The Healthcare Leader’s Guide to Actions, Awareness, and Perception (Health Administration Press, 2016).

This is Dye's third Book of the Year award. He won the award first in 2001 for  Leadership in Healthcare: Values at the Top, Health Administration Press and again in 2014 for Developing Physician Leaders for Successful Clinical Integration, Health Administration Press.

Leadership in Healthcare:
Essential Values and Skills, Third Edition

Carson F. Dye, FACHE

Today’s healthcare leaders face constant challenge and change. Even as they cope with a rapidly evolving environment, they also must overcome existing obstacles inherent to running multifaceted operations. A solid value system will anchor leaders as they navigate these daily hurdles.

This highly regarded book examines leadership through the lens of such values. It provides a comprehensive overview of leadership principles specific to the healthcare environment and explores both personal and team values that drive appropriate and effective behavior. Case studies, exercises, and self-assessment tools facilitate teaching, dialogue, and self-reflection. A valuable resource for seasoned practitioners and their leadership teams, the book is also used extensively in academic courses in leadership.

Updates to this edition include:

The first edition of Exceptional Leadership sold well to both practitioner and academic audiences. The Dye-Garman Leadership Competency Model has been used in several leadership contexts including leadership development, leadership coaching, and assessment of leaders.

Support for the Dye-Garman Leadership Competency Model include:

“A great read, Dye and Garman’s book allows leaders to take an honest and self-reflective approach to evaluating their own behaviors and experiences. In turn, it gives them the opportunity to confidently build on strengths and explore new ways of improving their performance. Worth the time!”

Michael H. Covert, FACHE, president and CEO, CHI St. Luke’s Health System, and senior vice president, Catholic Health Initiatives

“Dye and Garman continue their reputation for giving us an understandable foundation on which to build our professional leadership competencies. Exceptional Leadership: 16 Critical Competencies for Healthcare Executives is designed for healthcare leaders at all levels of an organization and all stages of a career. This book is most effective when one competency is read per week, considered, matched to the self-reflective questions, then applied during the ensuing week. That plan alone will improve healthcare across our nation.”

David Rubenstein, FACHE. Major General, US Army (retired); past chairman, American College of Healthcare Executives; clinical associate professor of health administration, Texas State University

“Too often, healthcare executives continually search for the leadership ‘magic bullet’ rather than concentrating on mastering the fundamentals. Exceptional Leadership is a vitally important resource that allows a clear understanding of the most critical leadership competencies for early careerists as well as seasoned professionals.”

Kathleen R. Krusie, FACHE, CEO, St. Joseph Regional Health Center

“I learned firsthand from Carson Dye how important it is for a leader in healthcare to possess certain behaviors and competencies. How leadership competencies can work for you or against you . . . and lead to success or failure. How do you choose the right path? By reading Exceptional Leadership: 16 Critical Competencies for Healthcare Executives.”

Randy Schimmoeller, senior vice president of operations, ProMedica Continuum Services

"The Dye–Garman model suggests that although the 16 competencies have not changed, reviewing them in the context of today’s landscape is imperative. I was extremely impressed with the focus of the six new chapters. They show the full balance required for good leaders to evolve into exceptional leaders. In Exceptional Leadership: 16 Critical Competencies for Healthcare Executives, Dye and Garman provide us with a current and focused competency model that will allow us to be the best leaders we can be and to be the change we want to see."

Denise Brooks-Williams, FACHE. President and Chief Executive Officer Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital

"This book is a road map for the way to exceptional leadership and a must-read for today’s healthcare leader—from the classroom to the management conference room to the boardroom."

Kenneth R. White, PhD, A/GACNP-BC, FACHE, FAAN. University of Virginia Medical Center Professor of Nursing/ Associate Dean for Strategic Partnerships and Innovation at the School of Nursing

"Drawing on decades of healthcare experience and research, the authors identify the patterns of behavior that drive success as well as failure." "Though the book is mainly intended for healthcare executives, very few of the practices suggested are specific to healthcare issues or scenarios. The book is concise and very clearly structured, making it a quick and enjoyable read for executives in just about any industry."

This is by far the best book I have ever read on physician leadership.  I only wish I would have had the benefit of the author’s wisdom 20 years ago when I started my administrative career.  Some of the topics covered include:

  • Identifying physicians who have a propensity for leadership
  • Addressing issues physicians face as they make the transition from clinical roles to leadership positions
  • Creating leadership development programs with an emphasis on the experiential side of leader development
  • The impact of physician leader derailment

Chapter 15 – Avoiding Derailment is by far my favorite chapter.  It provides insight into the reasons physician leaders can fail.  Again, if I had read this 15 years ago, I wouldn’t have had to learn things the hard way.  This is a must read for any physician leader – just starting out, in mid career, or nearing retirement – all will benefit from the insight and wisdom of Carson Dye and Jacque Sokolov.

Many of Carson Dye’s books are used in health care administration  graduate and undergraduate courses. The following material can be used  by faculty with these books or used for other leadership courses.  It is  requested that when used, acknowledgment is made as to the source.

Considerations in adopting  — Leadership in Healthcare: Essential  Values and Skills, 2nd Edition — for use in health care administration  courses

An increasing number of health care administration graduate and  undergraduate programs have begun to offer leadership courses as part of  their curriculum. Faculty teaching these programs are often confronted  by a paucity of texts from which to choose. Moreover, the popular  leadership textbooks that do exist do not address any special  circumstances that may apply to the health care field. Moreover, for the  health care administration student, their lengthy presentation of  leadership theories often lack applicability in the health care world.

Leadership in Healthcare: Essential Values and Skills,  2nd Edition was revised primarily because of the need and demand for a  leadership textbook that contained a health care perspective.

Leadership in Healthcare explains the connection between values and  leadership. It defines the role of both personal and team values in  improving behavior, performance, and morale. It also offers practical  strategies for strengthening leadership and interaction skills and for  enhancing overall effectiveness. Case studies, exercises, and  self-assessment tools are included in the book to help readers  internalize and apply the concepts.

This new edition includes significant revisions that offer:

  • Additional strategies for enhancing listening skills, engaging employees, and evaluating team effectiveness
  • Coverage of competency-based leadership, rapid-cycle testing, and the whole-person approach to leadership evaluation
  • Expanded discussion of servant leadership, change makers, emotional intelligence, and groupthink
  • Vignettes that apply chapter concepts to actual healthcare work situations
  • Sidebars, updated references, suggested readings, and cases and exercises

Leadership in Healthcare can be used either as a primary text or a  supplemental text.  The book has a chapter devoted to the review of  popular leadership theories. When used as a primary text, additional  reading material may be used to provide more detail on these theories.

One reason Leadership in Healthcare can be so applicable to a health  care administration is the case studies and examples that are health  care specific.  In addition, the vignettes that open each chapter can  also be assigned as case studies.
