Carson F. Dye is President and CEO of Exceptional Leadership LLC, an executive search and leadership consulting firm. The firm assists organizations in all aspects of leadership including assessment, selection, and development.
His consulting and counsel is based upon:
(a) a firm grounding in the principles of leadership and the assessment of leaders
(b) expertise in leadership competencies
(c) hands-on leadership experience in human resources, physician engagement and compensation
(d) significant experience leading several hundred executive searches in all types of organizations

Along with his executive search work, teaching, and writing, he has had considerable experience the past two decades in physician leadership and physician engagement.
A life-long student of leadership. Mr. Dye has a lifelong interest in leadership, its impact upon organizations, and how leaders are assessed. He has studied executive selection and how organizations integrate and on-board their new senior leaders.
Carson has worked for 3 search firms and has conducted over 600 searches for CEOs, physician executives, and other senior executives for a variety of healthcare organizations. He also assists boards in leadership assessment, succession planning, board retreats, and provides leadership counsel for a variety of client organizations. He is certified to work with the Hogan Assessment Systems tools for selection, development, executive coaching, and team building. He also presents physician leadership development programs.
Carson has worked with the search firms Witt/Kieffer, Lamalie, and TMP Worldwide. His consulting career began as a Principal and Director of Findley Davies, Inc.’s Health Care Industry Consulting Division. Prior to his consulting career, he served twenty years in senior executive positions at St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo; Ohio State University Medical Center; Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center; and Clermont Mercy Hospital, Cincinnati.
Carson is a faculty member of the Governance Institute and has been named as a physician leadership consultant expert on the LaRoche National Consultant Panel. He currently teaches leadership in the University of Alabama Birmingham executive graduate program in health administration and in the past has served on the faculty of Ohio State University, the University of Cincinnati, and Xavier University. Since 1987, Carson has taught programs for the American College of Healthcare Executives and has made various presentations to over 38 state and local hospital associations. He also serves as faculty for ACHE's Prep Course for the Board of Governors Exam.
He is the author of twelve books. Three have won the James A. Hamilton ACHE Book of the Year Award - The Healthcare Leader’s Guide to Actions, Awareness, and Perception, 3rd ed. (2016); Developing Physician Leaders for Successful Clinical Integration in 2014 and Leadership in Healthcare: Values at the Top in 2001). The book, Developing Physician Leaders for Successful Clinical Integration, was one of the top selling health care books in 2013 and 2014. He has also authored Leadership in Healthcare: Essential Values and Skills 0- Second Edition (2010) which is one of the most used leadership text books in graduate programs in health administration. His other books include ; The The Healthcare C-Suite: Leadership Development at the Top (2009); Exceptional Leadership: 16 Critical Competencies for Healthcare Executives (2nd edition, 2015 and 2006); Winning the Talent War: Ensuring Effective Leadership in Healthcare (2002); Executive Excellence (2000); and Protocols for Health Care Executive Behavior (1993) and several journal articles on leadership and human resources. The Dye-Garman Leadership Competency Model described in the Exceptional Leadership book is used extensively throughout the health care field and is the only competency model that is targeted at health care leadership.
Carson earned his BA from Marietta College and his MBA from Xavier University. He is board certified and a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
